Editors Note I met Uncle Sack one day while fishing on Cummins Creek. He claims his name is Sackfield Brewer and that he was born in 1804 and first came to the Republic of Texas from North Carolina in 1841 with his family and up until the 1880’s lived in Austin County. Needless to say, I was suspicious, as that would make him somewhere close to 191 yearsold. He is a big, heavy man with an unruly beard that covers most of his face. He didn’t seem all that old, certainly not frail, except when I looked into his eyes...His eyes were ancient. He would not tell me where he lives, other than to say "Fayette County, back in the woods..." I told him we were starting a little newspaper in Round Top and he said he had seen a few things; traveled a "far mile" in his long life and had a few "conclusions" he would like to share. Three days later, a letter showed up in my P. O. Box. It contained his first column. Every three months after that date, a new letter arrived containing his latest thoughts. |
